Molecular Dynamics Study of the Glass Transition in Confined Water

چکیده

A molecular dynamics simulation of SPC/E water confined in a Silica pore is presented. The pore has been constructed to reproduce the average properties of a pore of Vycor glass. Due to the confinement and to the presence of a strong hydrophilic surface, the dynamic behaviour of the liquid appears to be strongly dependent on the hydration level. The approach to the glass transition of confined water is investigated on lowering hydration and on supercooling in the framework of Mode Coupling Theories. At higher hydrations two quite distinct subsets of water molecules are detectable. Those belonging to the first layer close to the substrate suffer a severe slowing down, while the remaining ones display a scenario typical of supercooled liquids approaching the kinetic glass transition.

Glass transition and relaxation processes in supercooled water.

Many of water's peculiar physical properties are still not well understood, and one of the most important unresolved questions is its glass transition related dynamics. The consensus has been to accept a glass transition temperature (T(g)) around 136 K, but this value has been questioned and reassigned to about 165 K. We find evidence that the dielectric relaxation process of confined water tha...

A nano-scale free volume perspective on the glass transition of supercooled water in confinement

We employ positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) to measure the temperature dependent fluctuations in a local free volume of water confined in a variety of mesoporous materials with different pore sizes and morphologies. We demonstrate that this unconventional approach can be used to probe the dynamics and glass transition temperature, Tg, of water in confinement. In the simplest ca...

On the Equivalence Between the Thermodynamic and Dynamic Measurement of the Glass Transition in Confined Polymers

Understanding why the glass transition temperature (Tg) of polymers deviates substantially for the bulk with nanoscale confinement has been a 20-year mystery. Ever since the observation in the mid-1990s that the Tg values of amorphous polymer thin films are different from their bulk values, efforts to understand this behavior have intensified, and the topic remains the subject of intense resear...

Diffusive Dynamicsof Binary Lennard-Jones Liquid in the Presence of Gold Nanoparticle: A Mode Coupling Theory Analysis

Molecular dynamics simulation has been performed to analyze the effect of the presence of gold nanoparticle on dynamics of Kob-Anderson binary Lennard-Jones (BLJ) mixture upon supercooling within the framework of the mode coupling theory of the dynamic glass transition. The presence of gold nanoparticle has a direct effect on the liquid structure and causes the peaks of the radial distribution ...

Looking for the glass transition in a single molecular layer on the water surface

We present here results which indicate that polymeric monolayers confined at the air–water interface may provide interesting model systems for the study of glass transition phenomenology in a strongly confined 2D geometry. We report on photoinduced relaxation of the pressure–area isotherms in Langmuir monolayers of a photosensitive polyacrylate, using null-ellipsometry to study the evolution of...
